How to Overcome Windows Defender Firewall Blocking Some Application Features

This is a fairly common thing and you may have experienced it. When you open an application or game, a Windows Firewall appears stating that Windows Defender has 'blocked some features of this application'. Do you know what that means and should you allow access?

Why This Message Appears This

the message will appear when the application that you open wants to act as a server and accept connections. You won't see this prompt for most of the applications you use such as browsers and email clients. Usually, this happens when you use files associated with media servers, online multiplayer games, online file-sharing tools, and other server type applications.

By default, Windows Firewall will block incoming connections. But this only happens the first time you open the app. If you choose to allow this application, the next connection will pass immediately without needing to reconfirm.

Should You Allow Access?

When this box appears, you have several options. You can click "Allow Access" and allow incoming connections through the firewall, or you can click "Cancel" and the firewall will continue to block incoming connections for that application.

You can choose which network type you want to grant connection permissions to. For example, you can allow media server applications only on private networks. So, when you use your laptop to connect on public Wi-Fi, the media server type application will not connect to your laptop.

When you connect to a network, you can choose whether this network is public or private. Windows won't know about it automatically. You can change the options for this network later in Control Panel or in Settings.

If you trust the application and want to use all of its features, then you need to allow access. If you deny access to PC games, then you won't be able to host multiplayer games. Applications such as a Torrent client also need this access to upload data to other systems on the Internet.

If you don't recognize the name of the app, then you will need to search the web to find more information. some types of malware disguise themselves as servers and may trigger firewall alerts. Run a scan with your antivirus program if you think your PC may have had malware.

How to Allow or Not Allow Access Later

Windows Firewall will not ask twice in the same application, but you can change the settings to allow or deny this kind of application in the future. To do this, go to Control Panel> System and Security> Windows Defender Firewall> Allow. After following these instructions, you can allow certain applications to bypass Windows Defender Firewall.

Click "Change Settings" to unlock settings. Place the application on the list and then click the Public or Private checkbox to set whether the application is 'allowed' or 'rejected'. If you uncheck the box next to an app, it will not be allowed to connect to either public or private networks. If both are checked, then whether you are on a public or private network, your application will remain connected.

How to Turn Off Notifications

If you choose not to see this notification even though Windows still automatically blocks the requested connection, it's easy. You just have to go to Control Panel> System and Security> Windows Defender Firewall> Change notification.

To disable notifications, uncheck the option "Notify me when Windows Defender Firewall blocks a new app". There are two options here, one for private networks, and one for public networks.

By doing this, you will no longer be bothered by notifications stating that Windows Defender is blocking some of the application features you use.
